Whether you are camping in the great outdoors or enjoying a barbecue on the last of warm nights, the last thing you want is a pesky mosquito hanging around. Not to mention waking up to find you’ve been ‘attacked’ like a 2-year-old with chicken pox.

As a natural beauty, my initial thought was – well how can I possibly find a bug repellant that is remotely natural?

And then it appeared – Vanessa Megan Bug Off Me roll-on repellant.

According to Vanessa Megan, they only use high quality eco-friendly, natural and Certified Organic ingredients in their products. They do not use any toxic chemicals, mineral oils, parabens, PEG’s, artificial preservatives, colours or fragrances.

The facts about bug sprays – are they really that bad for you? and What is DEET?

DEET first emerged on the market in the 1950’s and has rapidly become the most common repellent ingredient against mosquitos and ticks. In fact, it is recognised by the WHO as the preferred chemical for protection against mosquito carrying diseases.

So what are the known side effects of DEET?

DEET is known to irritate the eyes and studies have shown that large, intense doses may cause neurological damage. It is also known to damage materials such as plastic, rubber and vinyl.

Despite these side effects, my trusty resource the EWG would recommend DEET when in areas where airborne infection is likely and severe.

So what is my personal verdict? (the juicy bit)

I was lucky enough to test Bug Off Me during the warmer months of the Australian summer so the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Unfortunately for me our apartment is lined with trees that breed mosquitos so there was plenty of testing time available.

Application was one of my favourite parts, roll on – super easy – and then you could leave as is or rub into your skin. The combination of oils used in the formulation doesn’t leave behind that infamous citronella smell that can be oh so overpowering at times. The million dollar question I’m sure you are all dying to know – is it effective?

Yes, for my skin type and the odd pesky mosquito that found its way into our apartment was tamed by the Bug Off Me.

Key ingredients like Tea Tree Oil and Cedarwood carry antiseptic qualities which are effective in treating a bit should you find yourself in that unfortunate situation.

Would I indulge again?

For use in most areas of Australia where airborne diseases are rare, then a botanical option such as Vanessa Megan Bug Off Me would be my number one choice.

If there was a need to protect the little ones (not the case for me, just one small dog who is happy to catch and eat flies!), I would have no hesitation in reaching for the Vanessa Megan option. 100% Certified Organic was a huge plus too, as well as the pleasant aroma and nourishing oils like Coconut Oil mean I’m protected without drying out my skin with harsh chemicals. Although a little more expensive than its toxic counterparts (most retail under $10), it is likely due to the 100% Certified Organic ingredients.

One last warning beauties: please do your research on the airborne/insect carrying diseases in your area to choose the best repellant for your needs.

Vanessa Megan Bug Off Me is available from Nourished Life along with a handy baby Bug Off for the little ones.
