Six important tools that will shake self-doubt and increase confidence

August 10, 2018

Have you ever had someone doubt your dreams? immediately your confidence is kicked to the kerb?

Almost instantly, we say to ourselves…

Is it worth it? Do I have what it takes to make it? I’m scared…But I don’t have the qualification yet…

Those fraudy thoughts and feelings that will inedibly cross your mind as you move towards that life or career that you truly desire

Do you experience these feelings even thinking about a change? Before you’ve taken any action at all?

In our work or career, as a business owner, you may be familiar with the term imposter syndrome. That internal feeling you get when your brain decides it’s wrong to be someone you haven’t always been.

Here are some examples of when you might experience self-doubt or fraudy feelings (imposter syndrome)…

+ We aspire to work for a new company that’s more aligned with our values but in a completely different field

+ We desire to take on a role that on paper we aren’t yet technically qualified for

+ We want to start a business when we’ve never been in business

I’m certainly not saying that it’s OK to make stuff up or attempt to be something that requires some level of trained skill – that would just be plain negligent.

But, if we look at these thoughts – what we think before we take action, they usually relate to our degree of worthiness and letting ourselves succumb to our inner critic.

Why is important to address what our inner critic is telling us first?

Our inner critic is very rarely factual by nature. It sets out to make harsh, unjustified assaults on our being

I often wonder if we’d talk to someone we deeply loved the way we talk to ourselves?

A line I once read which reiterated this point around facts versus the fraudy feelings:

“facts and evidence are the antidote to fear. My fraudy feelings can never outwit the facts” – Beingboss.club

Within my time at lululemon, I saw many a team members transition into roles that they were not “qualified” for initially (don’t worry, they don’t do open heart surgery at lululemon, just sell stretchy pants). It set a precedent for me, that it truly was possible to make shifts in your career without having to entirely start from scratch or even switch companies.

In fact, many of my colleagues embraced multiple shifts until they found their sweet spot, sometimes in short time-frame, sometimes over multiple years.

What if we could let go of or even eliminate those fraudy feelings? Wouldn’t that be cool?

Ready to take confidence to a new level?

In this week’s video today is share with you 6 tips that will help you if you’re ready to embrace a change but feel that self doubt and those fraudy feelings kicking in:

Here are the six tools for increasing confidence discussed in this weeks video:

+ Identify and bring awareness to our self-sabotaging behaviours “who am I to be/do…”

+ Turn to your inner mentor or sage: to reduce your self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviours.

+ Lean in to discomfort:  it’s inevitable.

+ Test, experiment, ask and listen for feedback: so you want to start a business? test your business idea out first as a side-hustle first while you are within your current role, to gain experience and credibility and reduce the need to make money from it.

+ Find proof you’ve done it before: Drop the job title momentarily and instead invest time in discovering your transferrable skills, strengths and talents – start identifying skills you have that aren’t specific to a certain job title or profession.

In addition to this, keep a prominent list of all your accomplishments, personal projects, personal development courses completed and milestones – these serve as proof that you can step outside your comfort zone and make it happen!
