OK. There’s no question of doubt in my mind: First, Yoga IS sexy.

We wear skin tight yoga outfits, breathe deeply, in the case of hot power vinyasa, build up sweat in a room full of people, and with some the feelings we experience in some poses, whether they are inversions, strong arm balances or even the fun of partner or acro yoga, it’s no wonder yoga can leave us feeling a little (or a lot) turned on!

As a studio owner, yoga teacher and a yogini for more than 12 years, I’ve seen some significant changes in my life – transformations beyond belief. And one of the really great things I’ve noticed is a better sex life. I’m apparently not the only one with word around the community that yogis are having better sex!

After consulting my fellow yoginis, I’ve come up with what I believe are the top 3 reasons for why yoga can improve your bedroom action. I’ve also described some great poses to bring yoga-sexiness into the bedroom—and take our sex drive to unimaginable new heights!

1. The physical practice

Yoga is guaranteed to tone up your body and turn up the heat on your lovemaking because we target the muscles of our sexual core to strengthen our pelvis, hips, and abdomen. We also engage our “Bandhas”, a key one being our “Mula Bandha” (Root Lock). Mula Bandha is the act of engaging the pelvic floor by pulling it in and up towards the navel.

We especially give our pelvic muscles a workout when we move into jumps and balancing poses. Yoga helps develop strong pelvic floor muscles, which brings the potential of longer-lasting and stronger orgasms. Finally, practicing yoga stimulates our brain to produce the hormone oxytocin, which is responsible for the formation of emotional bonds and trust. In some yoga classes we do partner yoga, acro yoga so we make eye contact and support others, working in a trusting environment.

Ultimately, this ancient practice assists us to form a strong connection with our partner & build intimacy, in addition to other benefits of yoga like increased body awareness, confidence, energy and flexibility. When we combine all these things in the bedroom we become alot more adventurous and playful!

2. Being Present

Yoga IS a moving meditation. We bring our attention to our breath and anchor to the present moment. We realise that by focusing on the here and now that’s when we are most powerful. How often have you allowed the stress of your day to affect your ability to really be present with your partner in the bedroom?

Don’t worry – you’re not the only one. Being truly present to the moment allows us to connect with our partner and the sexual adventure together. Staying in the present moment as opposed to allowing our thoughts to take us away is important.

3. Relax, Let Go and Just “Breathe”

Ok this is really 3-in-1. But this is what I often say in my classes – ‘Relax, Let go and Just Breathe”..

A key contributing factor to a strong libido is being able to relax and not feel stressed. We live such a stressful lifestyle, and I see the stress in all body types in my public classes.

When we can “Let go” of our negative thought patterns and enjoy being with our partner we feel so alive! With a steady yoga practice, we can learn to let go of our negative thoughts about our physical appearance and gain more confidence and accept who we are right here and now.

Finally, breathe. This is my favourite. For something so simple we take the importance of our life force (or prana) for granted! When we breathe deeply we create space in our muscles and cells, which helps soften and relax every part of our body and gives us more energy.

5 Yoga Poses to Spice up the Bedroom

1. Shoulder stand (Salamba Sarvangasana)

The “queen” of yoga inversions, Salamba Sarvangasana reverses blood flow, helps relieve fatigue, calm the mind, lessens symptoms of anxiety, stress and relaxes the body and mind. On an emotional level, this pose helps turn everything on its head and helps me see things from a different angle.

2. Wide legged straddle pose (Upavistha Konasana)

This pose works well for those who have low libido problem by increasing blood flow to the pelvic region. It increases the flow of blood around the pelvic area so energy levels are increased.

3. Child’s pose (Balasana)

Every yoga class I teach tends to start with this pose. As a gentle opening for the inner thighs and relief for lower back, it’s a pose that helps us tune the mind to the body. It soothes the mood and helps us focus on the present moment and “letting go” of the distractions of the world.

4. Reclined Bound Angle Pose (Supta Baddha Konasana) –This pose helps to lessen PMS and menopause symptoms, which helps you feel sexy and promotes healthy functioning of the reproductive organs. I love this pose because it teaches me to

be comfortable with being vulnerable.

5. Downward Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)

Downward dog calms the mind and invigorates the body. I can almost feel the tension sliding off my shoulders when I do this pose.  There’s something about shinning that buttocks to the sky that can give you a little confidence boost!
