The ‘Why’ and ‘How To’ of Goal Setting

As Conscious Beauties, we place equal significance on our Inner Beauty as we do on our Outer Beauty.  In fact, we have dedicated an entire section of the blog to achieving a healthy, balanced Inner Beauty – a true sense of self-love. To nurture this wholly, there a number of tools which form part of daily life. Some of these tools may be systematic or linear, while some may require you to delve inside and experience things that at first may be hard or met with resistance. We like to think of our Inner Beauty as having several working parts that need to be maintained, fuelled and re-calibrated just as you would use a toolkit to fix an engine.

Today we wanted to share with you a tool we use often – vision and goal setting. As Conscious Beauties, it is important to us for these reasons…

  • It helps to establish CLARITY – For me personally, I struggled for a long time with indecision in my life and an inability to establish a direction. What I know now was that indecision arises when I lack clarity. But clarity cannot come without knowing what it is you actually want in life. Goal setting is a way of laying out what you want and a direction to achieve it thus providing clarity and a framework for decision-making.
  • You understand your DESIRES – your vision is what you truly desire in life, and that desire comes from deep within. It may be material desire but it can also be experiences or even feelings.
  • It gives you a sense of ACHIEVEMENT, PRIDE & PURPOSE – setting a goal and achieving it, allows you to experience pride but equally important is that it gives you a purpose to wake up every morning.

Why is goal setting an important tool?

I never fully understood the importance of goal setting until I stumbled upon a little yoga brand called lululemon athletica about 5 years ago. The company’s founder, Mr Chip Wilson, discovered the power of goals early on in life, and set out to develop a culture of greatness in his company (and the world) through tools such as goal setting.

Here at A Conscious Beauty, goal setting plays a significant role in our personal lives and in the development and success of our blog. With this in mind, we thought it might be fun to share with you how we go about this in a few easy steps based on the process I have learned from my time with lululemon athletica.

How do you go about setting goals? what does the process look like?

The first step in the process is setting a vision for your life; this will be something along the lines of “what your life will look like in 10 years time”. This is the magical, creative part of the process where you get to bring to life all of those aspirations, feelings, aesthetics and people. You might like to do this is visually by creating a vision board of images. Alternatively, you may want to think of words that represent a life that leaves you inspired. When writing your vision, we recommend you don’t set limitations of money or time, write it wholly from within yourself.

The second step in the process is to set out your 1 year, 5 year and 10 year goals in the areas of personal, health and career. It is not essential for every goal, but if your 10 year goal is a big one, you may need to consider the steps that need to be taken to reach it, which could mean hitting a 1 year, then a 5 year target. One of the most important things to consider is that the goal should be specific and measurable, keep it short, sweet and associated with a value of time, money, quantity or object.  Consider also the language used – use present tense and be affirmative – write it as if you have already achieved the goal. Establish a by-when – a date for when you will have achieved the goal by, include month and year.

During this process, one thing to keep in the back of your mind, is that if the goal doesn’t genuinely excite or scare you, then likely won’t challenge you enough or you may want to reconsider why that goal is important.

One thing we should stress above all else, is that we should create goals from a place of authenticity, not from a place of looking good to others. The moment this becomes your motivation, you will probably end up frustrated and unhappy. Consider the process of goal setting as just one tool to create clarity in your life about who you want to be.

As part of our Inner Beauty Toolkit we suggest you check our post on how you want to feel which allows you to truly understand what you want to feel once you’ve ticked off that goal.
