Basics of Green Beauty – Tip Four Say no to Petrochemicals

Petrochemicals, sounds a little like petrol, sounds a little suspicious don’t you think?

That’s why we’re here to tell you a little more about:

1. what this term actually means in relation to your beauty products and

2. why it might be a good idea to give it the old ‘one two’ (flick!)

Nasty? why you say?

One particular form of Petrochemicals you may be familiar with in cosmetics is mineral oils. Mineral oil is a by-product of petroleum distillation, and during the process a whole host of other solvents and acids are used.

Similar to our little friend the Parabens, the issue with mineral oils like petroleum jelly (also known as a Petrolatum) is that it can be contaminated with cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Because it is often tricky to distinguish whether the chemical is being used in its pure form, is another reason to be suspicious.

Roll on Tip Three beauties! This week we are looking at why you should avoid artificial fragrances and colours in your beauty products.

As Conscious Beauties, many of us are already fab at avoiding artificial flavours and colours in the food we consume but sadly this may be neglected when it comes to beauty products. This is especially true for smell, for almost every product you pick up contains some form of both fragrance and colour. As with many of the chemicals discussed previously, the trick for newbies is knowing what to look out for, because many are implicitly labelled.

So beauties, we know a little more about why we should avoid Sodium Laureth and Lauryl Sulphates in your products, it is time to move on to Tip Two: No to Parabens!

As we discovered with SLS, we are pleased to see that many natural cosmetic and beauty companies are going to the effort to cut Parabens out of their products. However, as ‘Paraben’ is a blanket term for a whole host of chemical preservatives and fragrances, it can be a tricky one to spot and worse still, will have your tongue tied in no time.

This little nasty was one of the first chemicals that I black-listed back in the early days. Thankfully, clean-conscious product companies are clearly labelling this one, so it is easy to recognise when it has been excluded (or when it’s included if you look carefully).

So lets get down to business beauties.

Ever noticed how your shampoos or body washes get that fun foaminess to them? All that foaminess comes from our friends Sodium Lauryl and Laureth Sulphate.

We love bringing you beautiful products and spectacular ingredients, but we also recognise that some of you might be just starting out on A Conscious Beauty journey. Overwhelming yes, we know that feeling all too well, so we want to make it easy for you.

My personal journey has been over 15 years of discovery, from a pimply faced teenager to a young woman, I am still learning the good from the bad. As our world becomes filled with more and more (often hidden) toxic nasties, it is important that you have a basic understanding of what is in your beauty products.
