Take Your Yoga Practice With You

October 16, 2014

14.10.15_cora yoga travel post

As a Canadian living in Australia long distance travel has become a part of my life. The prevailing attitude in North American is that 7 hours is an incredibly long flight, and I must say that until I moved to Sydney I felt the same way. That was, until I made the trek back to my parents house on the East Coast of Canada, and racked up a 22 hours in the air – one way.

This sort of long distant travel is a whole new can of worms, and such, it required quite a bit of planning and preparation to ensure that I arrived as coherent and functional as possible. My arsenal of tricks was packed with herbal teas, moisture masques, guided meditations, enough H20 to drown a small bird – and of course, yoga.

Stay Strong In Standing Poses

August 21, 2014

Cora and bodhi standing pose

In many yoga classes standing poses make up about 60-70% of the class – and for that reason it is essential that you practice these poses with solid technique and alignment.

The foundation of all standing poses start with the foundation of your body – the feet!

Problems with our feet can have a huge ripple effect on the rest of the body because they are literally the foundation upon which our skeleton lives. The alignment instructions below can be applied to any standing yoga poses – and while they sound detailed, its important that you don’t strain to maintain alignment and become tense. It can take some time for this alignment to feel natural, but with practice it will not only improve your practice, but also your posture throughout the day.

Heat Up Your Yoga Practice This Winter

June 19, 2014

Ujjayi Pranayama and ocean shot

Brrrr, it’s getting cold here in Sydney. We had such a warm start to Autumn I almost thought that we were going to skip winter this year. Alas, June has ushered in the bedroom heaters and hot water bottles in full force. This colder weather can make it harder to roll out your mat at home, or even to brave the streets in the dark to get to a yoga class before or after work. However, once you are practicing there is a surefire way to warm up – from the inside out.

If you are a regular to practicing any style of hatha yoga, you may be familiar with Ujjayi Pranayama (pronounced oooojayi). Ujjayi Pranayam, also called victorious breath is a style of breath work that is conducted throughout a physical yoga practice. This style of breathing has numerous benefits like clearing and focusing the mind, but the one we will focus on today is heat building.

The Power Of A Personal Practice

June 5, 2014

Cora personal practice

Everyone comes to yoga with a different motivation – loosing weight, reducing stress and improving flexibility are usually what get us to show up in the yoga studio. However, recently I have noticed a shift – more and more students are telling me their motivation for practicing yoga has more to do with spirituality, than touching their toes. When I hear this, my ears perk up, my eyes sparkle a little brighter – and my response is usually,’what does that mean for you?’
