Stand Up Paddle, A New Kind Of Zen
…I have a deep love for the ocean. The ocean is my Sanctuary. The ocean fills many spaces for peace in life…
The air is clean, the salt water healing, the sand soft under foot. But most importantly, it keeps my soul in check when I need it most.
While I wouldn’t call myself a ‘water baby’ like some of my girlfriends, there is certainly something about the ocean that always keeps me close by. Apart from a small period at University, I have never lived more than a 10-minute walk away. I tried surfing in my early 20s and it wasn’t love at first sight and swimming (a quick dip rather) is great therapy. But then the moment came about a year ago, I discovered stand up paddling boarding and I knew we were going to be life-long friends.
Of course that knew found friendship needed fostering, so for my 30th Birthday I managed to convince my family that they should all come together to get me a board and paddle.
As a sport, stand up paddle ticks several boxes for me – you can make it as hard or as easy as you want, you can choose to catch waves or you can paddle on flat water, it is relatively easy to manoeuvre in the water. It is amazing for your arms, abs and legs.
Aside from the physical benefits, stand up paddle is what I call a ‘bliss sport’. Throughout the past year, I have had the privilege of sharing some breathtaking mornings with girlfriends, with my man, and sometimes even a pod of curious dolphins.
…I get to see the world from another viewpoint, which helps to put a lot into perspective…
Sometimes I sit down and chill, sometimes I lie down and float along. Every day I go out, I am grateful to my family for helping me to deepen my love for the ocean, just a little more.
